What is UL Certification?

UL certification is granted by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global certification agency driven by a singular mission: to make products and processes safer for consumers. The 125-year-old organization was founded in 1894 by an MIT-educated electrical engineer. To this day, it provides companies with independent, unbiased evaluations of their newest electrical products in an effort to safeguard public health and safety. Over the years, UL has expanded its independent evaluations beyond just electrical products to include construction processes, water testing, sanitation and much more. To date, more than 2.5 billion products manufactured in more than 40,000 plants around the world have sought and earned the UL mark. 

Is UL Certification Required? 

From a legal perspective, UL certification is not a government requirement in the U.S. or Canada. However, because of UL’s rigorous testing processes, many companies see the UL mark as a sort of insurance policy that protects them from unforeseen product safety issues. That’s why most manufacturers looking to sell their products to major enterprises, municipalities, federal government agencies, or other organizations that require proof of product safety will often pursue UL approval.
